That Chevy SSR Sport Truck cost ALOT of people hardship. The Chevy Factory Reps went out and did a super selling job to Chevy dealer principles - even hosting golf outings, Happy Hours, mega dinners and all with slide presentations of the vehicle, even calling it the next Camaro (saleswise).
Hopped up and some a bit "tipsy" -- dealer principles responded by ordering as many as the factory reps told them to.

My local dealer had like 12 on the lot. It took him 8 months to sell them all - he sold the last of the 2005s in mid-2006, for invoice.

The power cover over the bed only power raised 60% and it was pretty useless for carrying anything large. It wasn't a "Sports Car" lacking the H.P. & torque. It was merely a unique, unusual car-truck cross over.
The buying public couldn't figure out exactly what it was - - so, they didn't buy it.

Yep, the SSR was a disaster all right. When word first leaked out about it, I was all fired up, thinking that Chevy was going to make a hot rod El Camino again.

By the time the thing hit the market, its appearance did not thrill me in any way and its performance was definitely lacking, considering its price tag. Needless to say, I had zero interest.

Now if GM or Ford would import a good looking hot rod Ute from Australia, I would be all over it.

The SSR was a nitch vehicle. In no way should they have banked on any kind of profit from the project.

Impractical cars like the SSR, Viper, Ford GT, even the Shelby Gt500 simply won't sell to enough people to make any kind of contribution profit-wise to the company.

What it will do is provide consumers a kind of good feeling (excitement) that the car company is out in front, working hard to be innovative. That does help sell the ho-hum cars that are the meat and potoes of their bottom line, especially if they can pull a few styling cues from the top-end cars down into the cars attainable by the masses.

In the article it says asc invested 250Million in the SSR project. WTF were they thinking?

They got the dealers excited and all hot & horney for it too, and convinced many of them that it was indeed, "The Next Camaro"

Then they arrived at the dealers and the dealers went

The Salesmen were thinking, "What was my boss thinking"

and the customers spoke volumes
