Most interesting item on her is the ascMcLaren rear fender mount POWER antenna ! This was on "A FEW" 1987s. I could never nail anyone down on whether or not this was standard or an option. These cars got unique front passenger side fenders, with no supplier antenna hole punched in the front passenger side fender top !
Why is it that 90% of all used McLarens have these "pronlems" ~
1. Wrong wheels
2. Replaced Stereo
3. Replaced Roof from Bob & Jimmy's roof shop !
Why so few keep the OEM wheels ?
Why do so few opt to get the original roof from Hank ?
Why does everyone change the stereo and why do they throw out the OEM Stereo ?
Seems every one of these suffers the same Roof/Stereo/Wheel syndrome !

1. Wheels are like haircuts and prescription glasses - style popularity changes, thats the way it is...... You don't see people walking around with mullets and horned rim glasses anymore do you?
2. The stereo deal, and I have to say this could end up a generational thing, comes down to what format your music collection is in. And most importantly, factory stereos have come a LONG way since the late 80s, general enjoyment for up to date electronics is nice for drives (For those of us who drive their cars -
3. This one you may not understand Sandy because the tops on your 'verts don't see much action, in fact they are probably still in mint condition - right?. Your cars don't get driven, don't see the glaring sun, don't see the occasional rain (very rare), and overall up and down use. For the rest of us, they wear out, its a fact. And lets admit one thing, our tops, while look good, are not the best for functionality, talk about high maintenance and NON user friendly, you put it down wrong and you can screw it up royally - am I right??? I'm glad I got 15 years out of my original top, my new one will go at least 20, since the car isn't being used like it was the first 5 years. My top was replaced by a custom hot rod shop that normally deals in restoring high $$$ 30s-50s rods, they did an excellent job. But there are hack shops out there that probably have idiots replacing them and thats what you see on the cheap ASCs for sale that people didn't take care of.
Again, my 2 cents.....
Chris

Yes I can understand about the stereo if the car is a frequent driver.
Naturally, mine all have the cassette. the few times I've driven them, I usually listen to te radio. Oops, the Stereo. I like "Smooth Jazz" and the oldies. Lots of times it's off, as I like to listen to the car.
Regarding the roof, I'd onlyput on the original, from Hank. I've yet to see even 1 other roof that matchs the OEM. The replacements are so easy to spot. One would think that at least a few of the makers would invest in ONE roof from Hank, so that they'd know how to make it, and then just copy that one over & over. Some that I have seen ise 5 times more stitching than the OEM.
Yes, they should have been 5-lug, BUT that was Ford's mistake. Not ascMcLarens.

Lets also not forget the $ money factor on tops it is a lot cheeper to go the slightly off style than getting Hanks and most folks do not care they are just happy to have a nice top! On pristine ones like Sandys yes spring for the extra but on a driver go with the after market.

For a driver I agree go with what you can afford, and then try to save up for an original issue to put away in storage. I could of sworn there was a close copy out there with same color stitching and design but I could be wrong wouldnt be the first or last of that lol. If ever I come across it I will post a link for sure.
I would love to get an original stock stereo to put back in my car. I would then invest in an Ipod or sattelite radio for cruising. Heck dont they make a complete portable stereo for the Jeeps that we may be able to get away with if tunes are that important? I can imagine going to the beach or a park and bringing it along. A step above those old box radios we used to carry over our shoulders and look cool with until the Sony Walkman came out lol.

My new top that was put on in '03 is EXACTLY like my original top. The only difference is that the stitching on my new top is blue not white. The window locations and sizes were exact. I'd have to do some research, but I think it was an Electron Top. I have seen other mclaren tops by other aftermarket companies that were quite a bit different though, I know what you all mean.

Your top is dark blue, yes ??????? She is a 1988, Yes ??????
She has white stitching on a dark blue top, Yes ????
Call Hank, and ask him what he thinks. I call foul ball.
The only cars to have white stitching, were the 1990s with a white top !!
Post some pics, close up, of it. Then I can really tell fo sure.
I wanna see those little wrap around plastic windows.
