1987 #398, 5-spd, 53K for Sale

Hello,

As I mentioned, my '87 Guards Red with grey interior is for sale. I'm looking to get $9,500 out of it

It has many new parts and is in very good condition. I'll post more detailed pics in the image gallery linked below as soon as the weather clears up.

Here are a few details about the car:

-5-speed manual transmission

-Original Sikkens paint in very good condition

-Newer top in extremely good condition

-Newer tires, exhaust, heater core, radiator, alternator, starter, starter selenoid, battery and thermostat all with approximately 9,000 miles on them

-Original leather interior in very good condition. Minor crack on backrest of driver’s side seat

-The only non-original features of this car are the Mclaren body graphics; a strut tower brace to minimize cowl flex (installed for ride quality, not “fast and furious” driving); interior billet parts and black AC vents(have original stuff that comes with car); cell-phone-style radio anttena; and a keyless-entry alarm system with trunk release (comes in very handy since ASC did away with the keyed trunk!)

-Clean CarFax. Never wrecked (see below). I appear to be the fourth owner, one of which was the dealer/collector from whom I purchased the vehicle.

-The bad:

-Very minor curb rash on center hub portion of some wheels, but overall they look great

-the usual cracks at the corners of the plastic cover windshield frame (common problem)

-slight discoloration of the black portion of the instrument cluster - at night you can see a bit of green light shine through where it shouldn't on the far left side of the cluster.

-One new, one old head light from where a women backed into me at a stop sign trying to parallel park...four days after I bought the car!!!! She broke the mounting brackets and angle adjustments without cracking the glass. If you look carefully, you can tell the age difference between the new and old head lights - both OEM FoMoCo, though. Dime-sized paint chip on bumper touched up by auto body shop.

-Original inside front bow dressing has cracks in it at the slots where the pull-down levers come through it. I took it off to avoid further damage, but the original piece comes with the car and could be fixed if you're handy.

-Wimpy horn. Weak ground, maybe? Still works, just wimpy. I have the original Stebel Junior compressor and horns, but the compressor is rather rusted on the inside. The brackets that hold the brushes rusted off. A true purist could probably refurbish it.

Thanks. Will do. I don't expect to get full asking price, but I've advertised it at $9,500 in Auto Trader and their regional collector mag. We'll see. Given the economy and the select audience these cars appeal to, I could be sitting on it for a bit.

Question. I've never seen a McLaren with that tape stripe down the sides with "McLaren". Did you put that on? Just wondered if it was one of those little known options that only a handful of cars have. Kind of like the optional tape stripe that one of Sandy's cars have. Never seen that before his.....

No, it isn't asc installed striping. I was told that the dealer installed it where the original owner purchased the car. At first I didn't really like it because the font is italicized and not "correct" to the ascMclaren logo, but it's really grown on me. Plus, with the top down it lets other Ford fanatics with a slightly less trained eye know you're driving one heck of a special 'Stang.

The "Bumper-Body-Bumper" stripe on my 1990 Azura Blue car was ascMcLaren installed. You've never seen one prior, as it was "New-For-1990" @ $42.00 MSRLP. Of the 65 units made for 1990 the installation rate was small. I have the number - but no time to look it up just now. It came in Silver Metallic (mine) Dark Blue, Black and white. I too, have not seen another, but have the production listing and they are noted therein. (Off the top of my head, I think there were 18 of the 65 units made for 1990.)

Have you tried craigslist? When I was selling a couple of cars a few months ago, I found Auto Trader to be nearly useless, while I was contacted by many people who found the cars through craigslist. I also sold both vehicles to folks who found me via craigslist.

Yeah, I posted it on Craigslist as well, but only once and on a Sunday night. So it quickly went to the bottom of the heap. I'll try re-posting.

My only responses so far have been from AutoTrader. One guy near Toronto. But we'll see if after the photos are sent, etc. he asks for my address to mail me a bogus certified check as a deposit while meanwhile I ship him the car. No reason to think that yet, but that's been my Craigslist experience with international folks. So far this guy seems perfectly legit, though.
