Mike,
I have to say, I never thought there were that many types. My 3 86s all had the same type, but I don't remember the build dates on all. I DO KNOW that one of mine had a date of 1/86. And my 85's were the normal 85's. Possibly another non-chronilogical order thingy. Maybe just picking "stuff" off the shelf to get rid of the "old spare parts."

85/86 Headers

Post by svt1996cobra »

I would be interested in checking the engineering numbers on each of those headers. If memory severes me correctly, Mustangs/Capri's and Lincoln LSC's all got the tube style header. I bet at first, Ford had unique headers for each application, then as a cost cutting measure reduced them to one part number, and as they did this, swapped the part numbers they had in stock to deplete inventory. For example, put a Lincoln header on a Capri, because it would fit. Then as more headers came in, they all shared the same number. Here is a hypothetical part number change over:

85 Mustang/Capri E4ZZ-9430-A Right side header

85 Lincoln LSC E4LY-9430-A Right side header

New cost cutting inventory reducing part number : E5ZZ-9430-A Right side header

Then from that date on the part number of the header for both cars would be : E5ZZ-9430-A

So once that was announced about the part number change, they merge inventory, for a short time you could get either number on either application. Hope I wasn't to complicated on my explaination.
