The 85 Alpine used a small amp. The 85 Kenwood did not. I am pretty sure on this.

On the 86s my gut says, no. Since I haven't really heard of anyone pulling one out of their car. But I just do not know for sure.

On your car you would need to take the dash pad off and/or get on your back and see where all the wires go from your 7272.

The page I posted was just to illustrate how Alpine put extra connectors for external amps, etc. Dunno if asc added one under the dash in 86.

I never found an amp in either of my Coupes. I did add one--and a slim Alpine EQ to the '86 I wedged between the dash & console, but nothing on the '85.

What radio did your 85 have? Alpine or Kenwood?

Yeah, the Kenwoods didn't come with an amp.

Ponydude had the post style Alpine in his 85 vert and it had the small alpine amp up and under the dash.

From the sound & the power, compared to my 2 1990 'Verts, I have to say my 86 Coupe has something extra in there, probably an AMP.

My coupe had everything stock in it, no amp. Alpine 7272 Head unit and Kenwood front and rear speakers.

The alpine can belt out the sound fairly well by itself. Ford probably used very low power sound systems and speakers.

Believe it or not, the speakers asc replaced in your coupe probably have more to do with the improved sound than the radio. I replaced the front 3.5" speakers with Kenwoods and the sound out of the Kenwoods was FAR louder than the Ford stockers.

Most aftermarket speakers are more efficient than OEM.

I imagine the differential cost is minimal. There must be a longevity consideration, because I notice they sound better, but rot quicker.

Thats the truth, I was redoing my 86 and decided to run a new radio and found the foam on my late 80's Kenwood dash speakers totally gone. It set the whole project back 2wks just becasue of the speakers
