85 vert on ebay
Considering the cost to recover Recaros, $3,000 for the car as an otherwise rough driver doesn't seem too bad.

86 was the first year for MPFI EFI and was on both auto and manual trans cars. 85 used CFI on auto trans cars but had a carb on manual trans cars. CFI is Central Fuel Injection - a 2 bbl throttle body.

Thanks for the correction oo 84 vs 85 for the first year of CFI EFI. I always forget that the 84 auto trans cars had it too.capriman86 wrote: Negative for 79-86, EFI started in 84, SEFI started in 86

Technically, EFI started in '83 ... for the 3.8L V6 and the 2.3T. But if you're strictly talking 5.0L, yes, '84 was the first year. I am, of course, only speaking of the Mustang and (Fox) Capri.
There was an early CFI version (EEC III), around '79 or '80, but I'm not sure what model lines/models used that system.

When in 83 did EFI start on the 3.8 V6? My 83 CC has a V6 and is carb'ed. I don't recall it's build date, but it's not a very early car.

I do, actually like white Capri Bubble Backs
I like white McLaren converts with white vinyl tops & white
interiors (sadly only made for 1990.)
Today for some really stupid reason, the Chemo has kicked in (Outta pattern) So.... I better read and NOT post. or i'll be looking for a 3 speed manual 4-Door yellow McLaren

i worked on a CFI 83 lincoln continental about a month ago. it was a no start. i found bad wires for the crank sensor and a TPS that was stuck at WOT.FoxChassis wrote:Technically, EFI started in '83 ... for the 3.8L V6 and the 2.3T. Fuel Injection
Referencing Mustangs specifically as opposed to all Ford/Lincoln/Mercury products, in 1984 if you purchased an SVO model you received the fuel injected, 2.3L turbocharged engine rated at 175HP and a 5-speed manual transmission. SVO's were never available with an automatic as they were aimed towards the performance enthusiast, were fairly costly at the time, and sold less than 10,000 units total over a period of 3 full model years. In 1986, the final year of production, the SVO's power output had risen to 200HP. It was (and is) an exceptional handling automobile, being the first Fox-body cars to be equipped with 5-lug hubs, 4-wheel disc brakes, and 16-inch wheels. The suspension was also substantially revised over the standard GT and featured adjustable factory Koni shocks & struts.
If ordering a GT or LX model for the '84 or '85 model year with the 5.0L V-8 and an automatic transmission, you would also receive fuel injection, though it is the comparatively simplistic throttle body injection versus the later port injection and updated EEC-IV computer revisions which began with the 1986 model cars. 5-liter cars ordered with the 5-speed manual transmission all received carburetors through the '85 model year. 1985's also received factory tubular exhaust headers and roller lifters for less friction and improved high-rpm durability and power output. It's interesting to note the '85 model carbureted car was factory rated at 210HP, while the port-injected 1986's represented a slight drop, developing 200HP. Revisions to the cylinders heads and induction system gave a bump to all '87-up 5.0-liter models (regardless of transmission) to 225HP. Therefore, all Mustang-based ASC McLaren's from 1987 through 1990 received the 225HP engine, regardless of transmission choice. The only significant change worth noting is a switch to the more accurate mass-airflow metering system for all 49-state cars beginning with the '89 model year. A drivers airbag was also added for 1990.
Having owned a much-loved '85 for several years (see photo album) and being very 'into' these cars at the time... assuming memory still serves, all this information should be correct.

The Mustang and Capri had fuel-injection one year earlier on the turbocharged 2.3L. The Turbo GT and Turbo RS had an EFI 2.3T and T-5 manual starting in the '83 model year.
The '86 SVO actually went down in HP from the prior model year ('85 SVO = 205 HP).
Not all '85 5.0Ls had tubular headers. The "early" CFI engine did not. It had exhaust from the '84 and earlier model years (cast manifold, single muffler/tailpipe). That early CFI was also rated at less 15 less HP than the 180 HP version. The 180 HP version got exhaust from the '85 4V version (headers, dual mufflers/tailpipes).
The '85 CFI engine did not ever have roller cam/lifters. The roller 5.0L cam was in '85 4V and '86+ SEFI engines only. The CFI 5.0L got a roller block later in the model year but still had flat-tappet cam/lifters.
