What do you think of this 86, 3.8L, vert

Note: the actual folks who assembled the car, sometimes got confused and put items that were to be omitted on the 3.8Litre car. Therefore, some cars were probably built with items that were supposed to be left off!

Could this be a reason for the interior irregularities?

If they messed up, wouldn't they have put in the Leather Recaros?

The car is a 20 year old vert with over 130K miles....... the seats probably took a pretty good beating. So maybe they were just recovered in cloth.

Is there anyway to tell if they are the original seats?

According to the printed material that I have, directly from ascMcLaren the 6 Cyl cars (1986 only) were available only in white, black or red. Interiors were blue, red, beige or grey. Tops were black, beige or blue. Interior wood trim on dash/console was omitted, seats were the low line, basic Mustang/Capri buckets, covered in cloth. However leather covers were an option. Automatic was mandatory. Radar was an option, along with floor mats, and leather. The door panels were the stock base Mustang/Capri. The custom door panels and the recaro seats were not an option.
I can only go by what they said in print. If they altered any of this, afterward, I am not aware of it.

I was thinking that maybe at then end of the model year they wanted to clean out all the upgrade parts since they could not be used on the 87s.

But then I remember the V-6 was dropped mid-year by November 1985 and all the could be ordered was the 4 or 8. So much for that idea.

For car with such limited options and rarity, it seems to generate at lot more questions than answers. Too bad ASC didn't keep the production records to look at now. About all that can be verified is how it went to ASC from Ford.

To further pop holes in that theory, asc ran out of the custom door panels before the end of the 1986s, and THAT's why you'll frequently see a 1986 with Recaros and STANDARD door panels !

Thru like March/April of 1986 the Recaro Seating Option also called for the premium door panels with the big armrets, hanging straps, courtesy/warning lamps and stereo speakers. But they ran out of them, so then the Recaros made do with the standard door panels. As far as I can tell, there was no reduction in the price (MSRLP) of $1,675.00.

If you look at the center of the belt moulding, it is the 79-84 style with the single wide center groove and not the two thin grooves like 85-86.

The grill is correct...I mispoke! I thought I saw 5 bars!

I understand what you are saying about the moulding trim. I thought it looked correct from the front side view of the bumper.

If you look from the side, you will see it is mismatched to the side moulding.

Easiest thing is to get some 79-84 front corner reflector mouldings and replace the 85-86 ones....it still won't be perfect but at least it won't be a completely obvious mismatch....or scrounge for an 85-86 GS cover....which can be tough to find.

Well, I really appreciate all the input from everyone.

This car realy sounds like the perfect car for me. I did not really want something to restore........ but rather something that if I wanted to change it a little I could .... with a clear conscience.

You can really sink a lot of time and money into a car trying to restore it and then you are afraid to drive it. I have been down that road twice with my 65 Mustang coupe. It has been a garage queen for the last 30 years and the one thing I have learned.......... Metal is going to rust, electrical wires are going to get brittle and break, and the quality of the car is going to go downhill weather you drive it or not. So you better drive it and enjoy it while you can.
