TOP pull down and other
TOP pull down and other
Hello folks, I am new to this forum. I have a 1986 Mercury Capri ASC/Mclaren. I am familiar with Mustangs as I have had at least 30 of them since my first in 1974. This is my first McLaren. My so called "pull down" is not working properly. I have noticed a red wire that is not connected. Does anyone know where it goes? When you press the down button the top is released. That is it. When the top is up, it is really loose, unlike other convertible tops. Is that normal? Also, this car sat up in a garage for at least six years. It was painted around six years ago. So, the air dams and rear spoiler are not attached. When I was trial fitting the spoiler, I noticed that there was not any access holes to install and tighten the mounting nuts. The holes for the studs are there. The trunk lid looks like an original. The stud holes are all oval. What do I do, do I cut access holes? I am going to have questions in the future. so bear with me. thanks for your assistance.
Welcome to the site!! I have an 85 vert and have been struggling off and on with the tonneau controls for a while. I have been in touch with Henry (Paradise Motors) and he has shared some wiring diagrams with me. I am in the process of going over them and trying to decipher all the parts and sequences. When I am done, I hope to have a detailed drawing and understanding of this thing. I am quite busy right now so this may not happen fast.
First thing, there should be a green relay module in the trunk (boot), drivers side behind the carpeted cover right behind the wheel well. If you can find this, it is a good start. The only RED wire I can see on the sketches/drawings goes from the "K" terminal of the pulldown motor to the #4 terminal on the green box. There are 8 terminals on the green box with #1 being yellow. Please keep in mind this is just from the drawings and may not be complete info for now. If you have questions, I can look at mine and share what I know.

Thanks. I do have that green box. The car is apart as I am replacing all the brakes, mater cyl., slaves, etc. and the fuel injectors, sensors and anything else I can think of. Where can I get a copy of this wiring diagram? I used to have a 1986 Mustang convert., but this wiring in the back is different.
Another question. The wing and rear brake light was mot attached. The holes are there. How do I access the nuts for the studs of the wing? Do I cut access holes or what?? Does anybody know of a product that would clear up cloudy rear plastic windows on the top?

I have the wiring info but it is a collection of pieces and I am trying to get it organized. You are correct - the Capri and Mustang systems and wiring are completely differeent. I will be happy to get you something once I have gone through it all. May take some time as I will not be arouind much for a while.
I do not have an answer to your other question regarding the light and spoiler as my 85 has neither. I have scrathes on my rear window as weill but don't know of anything that can be used for that.

Maybe I can help with the decifering of the wiring diagrams you have. I have been working on cars for 40+ years off and on. Mostly Mustangs, but other makes as well. I am retired, so time is not an issue. If you could send me copies, I'll work on them and send you any work I do. I also have a very good friend who is a whiz on Fox body cars, and has four McLarens. One is complete and running, the others are not. I will rope him into helping as well. Up to you.
What would be the best method to repair the rear lower ground effects?/air dam??. Mine has broken pieces where it mounts to the body. I was thinking about flush rivets and epoxy, using aluminum sheet as a strengthener. Comments anyone?

The originals will most likely crack again after repair. The original material is far too brittle. Even the body guy, who I gave a NOS original piece to for my rear, gave up and glued the whole thing on to the bumper cover because the screws were breaking the bottom edge.Raydog60 wrote:What would be the best method to repair the rear lower ground effects?/air dam??. Get the reproductions from Hank in Florida. Anything else is just wasting your time. Also, when you do, ask for the ANGLE IRON strips. Hank engineered some strips to go along the bottom edge to keep the side repro pieces from warping (the originals warped worse).

My air dam is broken in one place, about 6 inches long on the passenger side. Everything else is OK. I looked at Hank's repair pieces. I am going to make my own. I have the metal, thin pieces of aluminum which will work just fine. some bending and drilling and that should provide the support I need. thanks for the support.
