90 Fix-Up - Let The Questions Begin

Post by CocoLoco »

Hi All - I just got my 90 and have few questions already as I start the restoration process. I'm sure I'll have more in the next few months so I will just add them here. All help and opinions appreciated.

1) Both of the emergency release cables don't work. The trunk release does seem to pull the cam far enough to release the lock. It almost looks like is misaligned but it all looks original. And the pivot arm (the cam) seems very sloppy and loose. The tonneau release seems to bind up on a little metal tab on the latch assembly. Not sure - hard to see. But either one seems to have enough travel or "oomph" to unlatch. Both cables move freely. Are these typical problems? So are these just a bad design or are they fixable? New cables maybe?

2) The lock cylinder for the glove box falls out when it is unlocked (or pulls out with the key). When locked, it stays in place. Is it broken or maybe it's missing a retaining ring? It works fine and I really don't want to replace it with one keyed differently.

3) There is a thin plastic protective film on the tonneau cover under where the roof hits (when up). It is very discolored and the edges are rough. Looks terrible when the roof is down. Can or should this be removed. Need to replace? My 85 Capri does not have this (but it was repainted).

4) OK. Here is an easy one. I have the lace wheels on the 85 but the new directional ones on the 90. No experience with these. How does the center cap come off? I see two slots but don't want to try anything until I am sure of what I am doing.

5) The rubber seal that goes around the roof storage area under the tonneau is worn in a couple of places. Is this a standard part? Does henry sell it? Has anybody ever replaced on of these? Looks glued on really well.

That's it for day one of my efforts. More to follow without any doubt.

THANKS in advance !!

I am not overly familar the 90 model.

The clear plastic I have seen on a few newer cars. My 85 and 88 do not have it. Its probably the same 3M material used for Clear Bras. You can get it in strips or find a Clear Bra supplier to make one.

I believe the rubber under the tonneau cover is the same stuff used on the Fox rear hatch. It should not require glue.
