Another mclaren mystery that we will have to send Sandy out with his Magnum P.I. badge to get some quotes or paperwork.
Or at least get some good juicy rumors.... :P

Sandy - get a dark mustache, a baseball cap, and jump in that mclaren vert (and pretend it is a ferrari 308) and do some snooping....

I was told at the time there was an Alpine shortage when production began, so Kenwoods were subbed in until that was resolved.

This is good info.... And if indeed that is a fact, that would make sense. They would have to find a radio somewhere that had a respectable name.

Only thing I can't figure is why Kenwood speakers were chosen, as I thought the brochure stated an alpine sound SYSTEM.

Maybe Kenwood had better speakers at the time - or maybe they got a better deal ?

Cars arrived AT ascMcLaren with NO radio, but had the "Radio Prep Pkg." that included wiring and the dash mounted center speaker, if rthere were provisions for it ( Capris I think). Radio suppresion plates (whatever that be) :) and possibly another 1 or 2 goodies. I was never able to gain a Radio Prep Pkg. listing of what was IN the pkg.
Sandy passed away in 2012. He will be forever missed.

They must have still been able to source some Alpines in decent numbers since they seemed to show up in all the verts. They must have figured the Coupe owners wouldn't mind the Kenwoods.

When my '85 Kenwood died two months into my warranty, ASC swapped in a 7272 for me. Didn't get an amp. Didn't see one in my '86 for that matter either. Anyone ever find a facory amp with an Alpine unit?
