GRAY OR RED SEAT PIPING EXPLAINED

Post by Sandy »

Guys, follow this through with me. There had been some mention this morning on the brake thread herein regarding the seat piping, in relation to the model ascMcLaren Coupe. I will explain.

There are (were) things that FoMoCo did on full packaged cars under code D32 ascMcLaren, that those cars allready had when the reached Autry Avenue in Livonia, Michigan, where our car were done. Those things that FoMoCo did on them, WERE NOT DONE on EuroCoupes. EuroCoupes were NOT built under code D32 ascMcLaren which would have triggered such. Understand?

Now, such is the case with the seat piping. ascMcLaren rightly thought that the RED piping would clash badly with the Popsicle Orange striping & decals & logos & wheels, so...they requested that FoMoCo utilize seat color matching piping in grey.

EuroCoupes. There were no special build instructions on EuroCoupes. Not having a radio is not special, it's a radio delete (credit) option. Likewise having speakers & a factory antenna / base and correct associated wiring are all part of the Radio Preperation Pkg., another option.
Therefore, EuroCoupe(s) HAVE the red piping!
Those 26 units that went to Northtowne L-M in Kansas City N-E-V-E-R sat foot (okay, tires) inside of Autry Avenue in Livonia. As a matter of fact, they NEVER were AT ascMcLaren, at all !!!! They went directly from FoMoCo's plant at Dearborn TO Northtown L~M in Kansas City.

I hope this clears that all up.

Zeke: I maintain that 1 of 3 things took place with your car:
1) Seats were changed at the original selling dealer. Perhaps in transportation the seat (or seats) were damaged or soiled and the dealership made a claim and the seat covers were sent out and they
sent grey piped ones to put on.
2) The seats were stolen outta the car, while in dealer inventory
3) A prior owner changed them.

I have never in 20 years come across a single EuroCoupe with Grey piping. There is some reason, more than likely 1 of the above 3.

Why?

Post by svt1996cobra »

Sandy,

If that is the case, why did some EuroCoupes get the gray seats? If Ford put the gray seats in on their line, why does Euro Coupe #10 and 2 others that I know of, then have grey piping, and my recently purchased Euro# 13 have red piping?

Hey Sandy,

You added that stuff about Zeke's car after I responded!

Euro# 10 has gray, Zeke's Car, and the EuroCoupe that is in Florida (pictures in Brent's Euro#13's album) have gray!

They have been changed, by someone. Ford only installed the GT-Style with under thigh adjustable moving piece seats on Mustang GTs & Capri RS (or 5.0 later) cars, using red piping. The seats with the grey piping were the exclusive domain of the ascMcLaren (FP). Possibly, assembly line error? Anything is possible. I am going by 2 things:

1) What the asc McLaren BUILD required, and was accepted by Fo MoCo
2) How 98% of the cars were built.

I do not know of any other criteria to go by.

Suggestion

Post by svt1996cobra »

I think this happen, The ASC Mclaren Coupe's when being built, whether a full package car or a Eurocoupe, had the ASC Mclaren buck tag on the core support. When a production line worker saw the ASC buck tag they stuck the gray seats in the car, not bothering to check the DSO. Think about it, for the last 3 years a ASC Coupe comes along with the ASC buck tag on the core support, we stick in gray seats. Now, the last month of producing the Capri, they change the game. We now have to look at the trim sheet and see what seats go in the car, I willing to bet some of the early Euro Coupes got the gray seats from Ford! Rather than stop the line or fill up the rework area, Ford said ""send them to ASC"! ASC said "build the cars"! Now 20 years later, we have something to wonder!

I don't think you understood my question cause your answer doesn't seem to fit...it sounds like you are saying all the 26 EC cars that went to NT got the grey piping.

DING! This car is from Northtowne.

I bet one of two things:

#1 made a mistake in their conversion.
#2 Made a deal with the customer for more $$ for grey piped seats.

seats piping

Post by svt1996cobra »

Vin #1MEBP79M3GF619524.

Car is smoke gray, auto, power windows and locks, power fuel door, power hatch release, cruise control, t-tops, and has gray piping on the seats with no lumbar pullout.
Eric5oh's car above! It's a ASC built car!

Eurocoupe #10 is ASC Built also!

Thing's that make you go HHHMMM?

619692 is "wrong" & should be red piping
619524 is correct, with grey.

I'd be willing to bet that the majority of cars with
red piping (over 90%) have ser. # 619683 to 619744, that being the Northtown "EuroCoupes".

I seriously must be dense. Why is 619524 correct (forget the lumbar support thing)? I thought none of the Eurocoupes were supposed to get the grey piping?

EuroCoupe's

Post by svt1996cobra »

I have a feeling that EuroCoupes have a description on paper, as to what they should be. But no real set norm, when it came to cars produced. The project for Mclaren was coming to a end. They had parts in the bins that are now outdated with the new 87 body style. They used what they could.

I would be interested to see if we could compile a list of which cars had which piping.
