White Lightenings
Interesting note on the White Lightening. I was actually selling Lincoln-Mercury at that time. That advertisment came out in every car buff book as well as many other magazines. It was an adv. that really attracted attention! Soon people began coming in and asking to "see" the White Lightening !!! Knowing what they wanted - initially we told them we were "out of them", and had more on order & took their name/number. We fast ordered loaded Black Magics, BUT in White! This is what they were after. I had a friend that I met selling Dodges and he & I left Dodge at the same time. It was not planned, but he too wound up at a L-M store, but like 40 miles from me. We spoke on the phone frequently One day he mentions to me about the people coming in for the "White Lightening" and we exchanged notes, laughing!! Same, all the way around, & he too had 2 (White) Black Magics on order. Soon, the management began calling them White Lightenings, too. One day, we actually had ANOTHER Lincoln-Mercury DEALER (as in THE dealer owner) call our boss looking for a "White Lightening" ~
But, in truth it was all bad planning as it was one of those things where the two didn't come together at the same time, and the "moment-in-time" was lost forever. By the time our "White Lightenings" arrived, and we salesmen called our customers who had been in (up to a month or 5 weeks prior) ~ we found that they had all bought something else, somewhere else! My friend managed to snag one, who had not bought, but like us, he lost the other handfull of buyers. By the time we recieved our cars, the White Lightening advertisment that had caused all the fuss, had stopped running and was all but forgotten, and there we sat with 4 in stock ~~ White Lightenings.
(and) THAT is THE story of the "White Lightening" and how it got its name, actually FROM the buyers from the magazine advertisments that did their thing, and brought them in to see a car that didn't really exist.
It was, however a sharp looking car. We eventually sold our 4 units to people who called them "White Capris"
"Who Knew?"
I wish I had one of the ones I myself ordered, NOW! Loaded cars with T-Tops & Recaros and Cassette Stereos and and and. Oh, that gold-on-white striping ! After they arrived, we ran an advertisment in the LOCAL newspaper, announcing that White Lightenings were now IN STOCK.
We got no responce. Had one on the floor, and 2 cleaned up parked outside, but out by the road, with white balloons on the antennas. Took like a month or two to sell our 4.

As the self-anointed Number One Black (White) Magic fan on the site, let me thank you for the great story. I just love the look of those cars.
I find those ads depressing, because I can remember seeing some of them when they first hit the magazines, and that was soooooooooooooo long ago.
