Group; need some help ~ to help a guy up north

Post by Sandy »

COUPE OWNERS, years & years ago I got a tele. call from a guy in California. He wanted info regarding the OEM tailpipe, muffler and front pipe on his 1986 ascMcLaren Coupe. I really knew nothing regarding these items....later on he called back to tell me that these cars systems were all welded together and he had to replace the entire unit, engine to under rear bumper of pipe and muffler as both sides were bad - so he did both and it cost $1,000 ($500 a side.) End of story #1.

#2. Today I get a call from a guy in Canada (also resides in Wisconsin). Well, his driver side muffler went bad. He wants to know if it's the stock Capri 5.0 R/S equipment or if ascMcLaren altered it, or if Ford installed a unique system. (He seems to know more than he is letting onto ~ he seems to be sorta kinda "testing" me........

That said....WHO knows real hard core facts about the system on 85 & 86 Coupes ?? I confess, I am lost on this. I can tell you that my 86 Coupe sounds 2 x times as fierce as my 90 convertibles, which sound stock GT-like. The Coupe draws attention at every light, if not by looks, by sound.

Now this guy bought his car, as did I, brandy new, and like mine, it's never been altered, it's bone stock.

If curious, it's #17, white, Pwr. Locks, Automatic, orange decals. Steel Roof.
Any ideas at all ??? Like I said, he is like testing me. I get that feeling...
Sandy passed away in 2012. He will be forever missed.

My '85 was stock Ford exhaust, period.

As for replacement, any system from cats back from '85 & '86 LX or GT, '87 -'93 LX will work. There are no new replacements available from Ford which I found out when I needed to replace the system in my '86 LX a couple of years ago. However, tell him to cruise a site like the Corral, I found a like new, under 1k miles, original '86 complete exhaust from headers back to replace mine and it came from, of all places Canada.

My car which seems to have the correct engine and all, had the stock headers and Y-Pipe (unique to 85) setup. From that back (mufflers/tail pipe), it had already been changed.

Sandy, you need to get some under car pics of your car. Then I think we would know if 86s were different from Stock Ford.

I got an almost new YPipe and cat from an 85 GT off from ebay. Someday it will go on the car. Here is what the stock 85 exhast (without mufflers or headers) looks like:
