Truth on camshafts?
Truth on camshafts?
I have read from two different sources that:
All pre '87 cars got the B303 camshaft and accessories.
Or
The B303 cam was a production idea, but not continued through the model run.
Which is it?
Would my automatic car have had one? (Sandy does yours?)
How did they get the B303 to work with the speed density system?
Which manifolds were used? The standard tubular 5.0L Mustang or was a Motorsport header used?
I think that is it for now.

Yes, my Automatic (1 of 9) does have the B-303 Cam, and NO, they really didn't get it to work with the speed density system, and I am of the belief that the stock 5.0L manifolds and headers were used.
You can tell IF the B-303 is in there, as the car will exhibit the following:
Upon cold start-up, she will sputter & stall at about the 90 second of running mark. Upon re-start, she'll run fine and not re-stall. She will have a somewhat louder exhaust note (or perhaps just deeper).
While driving - at a very long traffic light, on stuck in traffic he engine will get "lumpy" and start to surge up and down betrween 900 and 1,200 RPMs. If flipped into "N" (nuetral) she even out, but if left in "D" with driver foot on brake, she'll eventuaslly die, and need a re-start, where upon she'll be fine again.
A stock 5.0L Capri will not do these things.

The B303 cam story is an interesting beasty.
Sandy has said that it was in the 85-86 coupes ONLY. For 85 at least, almost ALL the verts were automatic cars and therefore CFI and flat tappet...so NO B303 was possible for those cars and probably not done on the manual tranny verts either.
For 86, ALL v8 engines were roller engines and could have gotten the B303. However, I have not heard a vert owner pipe up and say that they have found a B303 in their car yet...or at least I don't remember hearing of it. People have "claimed" it on ebay but have not said that they pulled the cam and verified it. I am not sure if Mike Martinelli has verified it in his 86 Coupe, but I "think" he has.
For the coupes, I have heard from at least one person say that their 85 asc did not have the B303 (they added one). My car seems to not be as "lumpy" in the idle as what I have been told it should with a B303. Someday I will open her up and see what is inside. I'm almost thinking that the B303 may be a later 85-86 only deal.

cam
When I start my 86 Eurocoupe, the idle races to about 2800 rpm, then drops off quick to about 200rpm shoots to about 1300 rpm, then levels out to 900-1000 rpm. Then drives like a normal 5.0.
The car pulls hard for a 86, I have a buddy that has a 86 Mustang GT with a 5 speed and 4.10 gears, the ole Eurocoupe hangs right with him, and she's a automatic!
I think the part number of the cam was a B302, not B303. if you look in the old Motorsport catalog (1989 I believe has them both listed) you will see the cams listed. I called Ford when they had both cams for sale and asked why they had the B303 and B302 cam listed since they both share the same lift and duration, they stated the B302 was designed to work with a speed density systems, and B-303 was designed for mass air. The cams had different timing events if you look at the catalog

Well actually I looked it up and Sandy says the Eurocoupes did not (were not supposed to) get the B303.negusm wrote:Supposed to.bigzeke42 wrote:Did all the 86 asc coupes have the B303 cam?

Although it seems a few people swear their Eurocoupes got grey trimmed seats instead of red....so maybe some got the B303?

David, you are correct, and ascMcLaren did use the B-303
in them. NO Converts, regardless of model year, got the B-303.
All 1986 did and MOST all 1985s that I have found also did.
Mike, did you buy yours brand new ? If Not, that coud be the reason. Some owners returned their cars & complained of the lumpiness and stalling and under warrantee, Ford replaced the 303 with the original 5.0L V-8 cam, found in the Capri RS of 1985/86. I do know of two such cars, one in Texas the other in North Carolina.

On these 86 cars, are you guys sure this isn't the typical "surging" problems 86 cars have?
My neighbor put in a wild cam in the 67 Cougar he got from us and it does not jump RPMs but it does sound "labored" when it idles.
Its possible that the B303 causes the surging because it wasn't supposed to be well matched to the new EFI setup. But I didn't think that fluctuating RPMs do not really tell you anything about the cam.

mine doesn't die right after start up but it does do the engine surge, but so did my other 86 5.0 capri, however, the car has a really lopey idle and is hard to drive through a parking lot. However, someone gutted the interior of my car, maybe when they took the 140 speedo, they thought what the hell and took the cam to? I dunno

the best and easyest way to check to see if you have a B303 is with a vacuume gague because of the duration of the B303 you get that surg you guys are all talking about and the deep throughty exhaust note
with a vaccuume gague hooked up on a normal car you should have about 18-20 InHg but i have found with the B303 in my car that because of the long duration my vaccuume is hurt alot and with a gauge hooked up i get about 15-17 InHg and usualy not a verry steddy needle like normal eather
also about 3 weekes ago i cleand and rebuilt the original heads off my car there has been talk of prototype parts used on the valve train and it is TRUE but not the parts you guys think. my heads did not have the right valve guide seals they were hard plastec my teacher told me they stoped useing thoughs types of seals in the 70s also the valve spring retainers did not look right he told me... the teacher i had was well over 60 years old and had worked on every block and head ever built he said thease heads looked odd for a 302
sorry about my spelling
