tops

Post by svo413 »

I saw that one too for a long time. Not there anymore. I was thinking he was from So Cal or MI. He only had black and blue colors listed.

FYI another technical source www.electrontop.com under McLaren model. They show some dimensions of the different years. They also sell parts like the cables. Price looks the same If I'm reading it right. Installation time 6 hours. Long time business in NY

top replacement

Post by shelbyscarab »

I had my top replaced 2 yrs ago with an Electron brand Mclaren top. It matched my original top perfect, plus it had blue stitching that blended in with the fabric instead of the white stitching that stuck out terrible on my original. I seem to remember the top itself was like $350.

What's with all of the measuring that they require? Did the tops change from year-to-year or did they vary within a single model year?

I need to order a new top, but I could see myself screwing up the measurements and getting one that wouldn't work.

'Ya, I wondered the same. I do not think that i'd trust them! Better to purchase one from Hank. You are then getting the REAL thing, and not a copy.

Regarding Mustangs, the 87, 88 & were one style, and the 89 & 90 were the newer style.

The real ones will have color matched stitching, while copies will have light grey/white stitching (ugly). On the real ones, the small wrap around plastic windows (2) will be smaller. On copies, they are larger. The sew-style is also totally different and much nicer and neater on the 89 & 90s.

Colors: Black, Atlantic Blue all years (1987-1990)
Tan in 1987-1989, NO 1990 !
Claret-Wine in 1989 & 1990
Oxford White in 1990 only
Dark Chocolate Brown in 1989 Only.
Aresma Silver was scheduled for 1990's "Silver Anniversary Edition" ~
but none were used. Only 2 Silver Anniversary Editions were made,
one getting the Claret-Wine roof and the other getting a black roof.

What about the cars based on the Capri? Did their tops differ somehow? If ordering from Hank, are measurements required?

I think the structure of the tops remained the same. It's the way the fabric was sewn and overlapped is different from year to year.

If you contact Hank in FL I bet he could answer that right away.

No, you need no measurements for Hank.
The Capri tops were the same as the 87 & 88 Mustang ones, but
only in 3 colors: Tan, Atlantic Blue & black.

Measurements

Post by svo413 »

The catalog from electrontop shows what the 3 different sets of measurements are and where to measure. It seems there is a difference in the center deck (seam above rear window, 50" or 51"), distance between bows (12 1/4", 13", 14 1/4"), and the height of rolled lip below the rear window (7/8" or 1 1/4").

For 1/2 the price of Hank's it's worth considering. Requires side flap to be stitched by installer.

I ordered mine from CabrioWorld about 5 years ago...fit fine until someone sliced through it just to vandalize. I replaced it with an E-Z On top 3 years ago. No fading in the hot El Paso sun and it fit like a top (no pun intended). I'm really surprised at the quality, plus the windows can even be factory smoked (mine aren't). I did the replacement myself with 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive. Went on in 4 hours (including adjustments). A fairly easy job.

If you need the info:
