I bought a radio from Hank a few years ago for my Coupe. This was before I found out about the 7272. He sent me a used Alpine stereo. A post-style 7164. Anyone ever seen one of these in an ASC?

Yes, I looked hard & long. 3006 it is ! I am sure. THST must be the stereo ascMcLaren put into the 1984 & 1985 ascMcLaren 5.0SC 'Verts, with the wood piece in back. I wonder if it's a decent stereo ? I guess when they ran out, they switched to the Ford Electronic Premuim Stereo.

I don't know if I agree Sandy.
I think that radio is a replacement. I don't think it was available in 1985. If you look at the Kenwood KRC-2001 which asc was using for the coupes (I posted a picture). The krc-2001 radio has no "roundedness" to its style.
I have been pouring through ebay ads for 2 years looking at Kenwood and Alpine radios and speakers.....and I think that KRC-3006 doesn't go any farther back than maybe 1993....I could be wrong of course...
I think they were using the alpines. Several people as well as a few others have the alpines. I almost bought a post style alpine 7272 out of a vert from somebody here...can't remember....I could look it up.

There were a million radios that would "work". Anyone from Kraaco, Kmart, Realistic, Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, etc made a post style radio. They all came with face plates and so forth that would cover the opening like that with no problem and look perfectly at home.
What's in Ponydude's floating McLaren? What was in Eric's White one?
What's in OTHER 1985s ? Shouldn't be too hard to figure out...
I guess I will start sifting through back emails and posts looking for hints. Most vert owners have mentioned having the Alpine it seems. As for ponydude, he has the Alpine 7263 radio (post style). I saw the car and didn't look at the model number...but it was definitely an Alpine. The Alpines have those distinctive clear lighted memory buttons.

We know that ascMcLaren used Alpine & Kenwood, so while I do understand the point you were making, we know that Kraaco, Pioneer, K-Mart & Realisitc weren't even on the property on Autry Avenue! It's gotta be either an Alpine or a Kenwood. I think it's a Kenwood, and the one I mentioned above. Seems 1984 & 1985 they were dialed into Kenwood & in 1986 got friendly with Alpine.

I think it was there. I don't exactly remember as there was mud still everywhere. His comment was that "all the wood trim was there and he was going to get it restored".
The only problem with that krc-3006 is that I really really don't think it was available at that time. The KRC-2001 was the top of the line Kenwood at that time. I had a guy email me after I won the brand new KRC-2001 off from ebay that he had the same unit back in the mid 80's and it was the very best unit offered by Kenwood. That KRC-3006 probably came 8 years later.

One other thing....the KRC-3006 appears to have CD controls built into it. This is another reason why I bet its a replacement. If you look in the trunk of that car or under the seats I bet there is a CD changer in it....somebody wanted to listen to CDs! I don't know but tapes were still pretty big in 1985 and CDs were just getting started. I just have my doubts that that radio was around that far back. I wish Kenwood had a few more archived brochures going back a bit farther.
Another note, the KRC-3006 seemed to have been a very popular aftermarket replacement radio for classic corvettes. Kenwood discontinued the radio in 1999 and they are still making "clones" of that radio.

Just for the record, I do have the woodgrain on mine and it is intact. It just needs minor repairs (I live in the heart of furniture country) and refinished.
Also as a side note, has anyone noticed how ASC chopped up the original console and message center/clock the adapt them to the McLaren console? That's what it looked like to me. Also, the message center mounts were reinforced with duct tape. Really looked like original to me, as this car was basically unmolested except for the flood.

I took a look at my console, which is out of my car, and took a look at the message center. Lo and behold, there is the duct tape. LOL! I would venture to guess that it IS original to the car!
The message center is the only place where the wood remains in my car.
