Re: 351 Mclaren
I have an SVO setup in my 85. The biggest issue with the SVO rear disk setup is not that it is a 7.5 rear (The axles and all the brake parts will bolt right on a 8.8 housing), its the fact that it is 1.25" wider per side. You need to locate wheels with at least a 45mm offset and a 70.3mm hub (05+ Mustang is close) The SVO has special wheels with a 54mm offset to handle the extra width. I have Mark VII LSC wheels on my car and their 38mm offset is not quite enough. A similar issue exists for the front as well. The SVO/Lincoln rotors have a longer hub that prevents some wheels from physically fitting. There are ways around both issues, but it requires modifying the stock parts.ASCMCLRN wrote:
I remember reading some positive info at one time but until I find the link forget it, I also heard the negative. In regards to the extended length you will have the same problem in most other applications such as swapping in a Lincoln Mark VII rear, Thunderbird Turbo Coupe rear, or IRS rear btw. You don't want to use an SVO rear, true they are 5 lug but they use the 7.5 rear. The cheapest most effective way to convert is to swap Mark VII front rotors right in and use Ranger rear 5 lug axles however I imagine that would also extend outward like the others. If you are looking for better braking at an affordable price get the 73mm calipers from a Lincoln vs using the 60mm Mustang calipers. Add on stainless steel brake lines and steel whatchamacallits (bushings?) for the calipers. Huge difference over stock and so inexpensive.

Since I am doing a second 5lug conversion on my son's car, I am going the SN95/ Ranger Axle route. The SN95 spindles will bolt to the FOX suspension with either a change in ball joints or the use of a .330" spacer. This fixes the front hub issues in regards to wheel fitment and the Ranger axles and drums fix the width issues in the rear.
