If you believe this you probably dont know much about Sandy lol jk. This was a joke but would like to make a point. Printing vin numbers might not be a good idea. Allot can be found out about the car or the owner using this information. IMO just use the dash plaque number instead. If it's in question then we can do further research if necessary.

This discussion is perfectly valid but really only in the asc Discussion area.

However, your point raises a good point that I have thought about.

Sequence numbers. They don't work in our case. They get lost and replaced with different numbers. Vins are the only thing that will keep things straight.

You see cars constantly on ebay with the VIN listed.

People are not obligated to post their information here. If you are worried...then call Sandy...he will keep things all private.

There are technical reasons too. I really don't want to have the database area turn into a mishmash of posts that I have to constantly police. The only way to do that is to make sure that duplicate cars are not posted separately....and I can do that by knowing the VIN.

I have made the system allow for the check digit to NOT be required. This would at least allow for an incomplete VIN to be listed instead of a completely valid one.

Bottom line, is any worthwhile system available publicly needs the CUN and date of the car. We already have something of a database already...it's called the classifieds...and it's pretty much a mess. Everything else but the check digit is standard stuff. If you don't want your car's information in there then tell Sandy about it or just leave it out. No system is perfect and it's the best I can do.

PLEASE, EVERYONE read the posted guidelines first.

"Enthusiasm" seems to be weak for this here registry.
The VIN exhibition seems to be a sticking point. Perhaps we should delete the VIN request. Some valid points were made.
I put mine there, as the car does not live at my home, so nobodies coming here & finding it, but others may have theirs at theeir residence and I can see where & how they could be edgy about it.
(Matter of fact, NONE of my McLarens live at my house. They are old enough now to have their own apartments, and they do.
At home are my & my wife's daily drivers, behind an electronic garage door, with a double steel lock and alarm, with motion detector lighting.

I think going with the last 6 digits of the VIN would be the way to go. Most of us here are enlightened enough to figure out 10 of the 11 digits that precede the last 6.

Exactly, I think this info would be helpful for future owners.
EX: Accident, salvage title ect. Once, these cars are sent to the crusher
they are gone forever.

....it's sites like this that keeps the enthusiasm alive for
these cars. What better place to keep track of them and there history.

I will change the system to only require the 6 digits of the CUN then. This can be accomplished...it will take me a little bit to do it.

Users needing/wanting more complete info, will have to keep in mind the change in digit code for a 1986 'Vert WITH the 6-cyl. engine.

The topics are HIDDEN from NON REGISTERED users. Therefore anything like bots or casual browsers won't see it at all.
