Dittos on Ebay. And in addition, it does help to list something without a reserve, but how many people have the "rocks" to do that with something like their ASC McLaren. It cracks me up when you list something, it doesn't sell, and at the end you get that "Ebay tips to sell your item/and their opinion why it didn't sell" Invariably, you get the #1, don't put a reserve price on your item. You could have a legitamate $10,000 ASC and have it end up selling for a ridiculous $3-4K if the "right" people aren't seeing your ad, and there you are with no reserve. SCAAWROOD!
I've heard of a few ways around this result with "no reserve". Have a friend (or have a second identity yourself) bid on your item at the end to bring it up to where it should be (its up to you and the buyer to complete the sale anyway) and then just don't complete the sale between the two of you.
This is why I'm leary about putting any "large ticket items" on there for sale.
Also, Ebay isn't doing enough to combat scams, deadbeats, or people who are simply out to screw you. IMO, they've been going downhill the last few years, not to mention they've also been steadily increasing their fees.
