New McLaren owner with questions
New member here! I had an 88 McLaren about 10 years ago and sold it but I always wanted a Capri model, so I finally got one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Mercury-Ca ... true&rt=nc
I know it needs some work and I haven't even received it, yet, but I am already starting to look source out parts. I bought parts from Henry before, so I am aware of that site, but I have a few questions.
I want to add ground effects, but I don't want the McLaren style. I would like to go with the Saleen kit but it won't fit the front. The RS just doesn't look finished to me since it is missing the side skirts, but I have seen what I think is the RS front valence with the Saleen side skirts and the Saleen back valence. Is that rally the only option? I don't want to put a Mustang nose on the car.
What kind of seats does the car have? See the auction--they don't look like seats I have seen before but they have the McLaren logo sewn in them. I can cover seats myself, but where do you get the kit??
I assume I can buy a Capri coupe carpet kit to replace the nasty one in the car, but where can you get the fabric for the console and storage box piece in the back?

welcome to the site, and nice find. Now i like the look of the capri's without the ground effects personally, i wish mine didnt. of course, if it didnt, i wouldnt need to spend $400 on a new front, and about that for a rear one, plus paint lol. I do agree though that the verts probably would actually look nicer with one. I thought the verts used recaro seats no?

Looks like a nice car for the price.
The top looks to be restitched or an aftermarket unit.
Carpeting is standard Capri Hatchback. Capri coupe never existed.
Recaros were optional. Standard seats were recovered in leather. Don't recall seeing standard seats with ASC logo on them.
Body issues are pretty much the normal issues.

Just a question out of my curiosity - are these the correct interior door panels? My 85 has the custom ones with the pull ropes, etc. Did these go away in 86? And the switches under the armrest? Doesn't look like any I've seen (which is not many).

Do you mean that the asc Capri and Mustang vert used the same panels?U-MAN wrote:Hi Guys ...Just for what it's worth. Those are the same door panels that I have in my '86 "vert. Looks like the Capri and Mustang use the same panels.
The normal Mercury Capri never received those panels as they have the wider carpeting that came on the Mustang convertible panels.

The door panels look like my 86 vert panels too. There is an 86 mustang gt on ebay right now that shows the same panels.

Go down to the 7th picture and there is a good shot.

Update on purchase
So, I finally got the car home and started digging into it. It really isn't as bad as I thought but it does have issues. I think it sat for a long time and the top wasn't sealed. That explains the nasty carpet and tires with flat spots. It drives like a truck but runs really well.
I took out the console and rear piece and they cleaned up really nicely. I ordered a new carpet but it will take a month to get here.
I painted the grill, headlight buckets and tail lights and they all look great.
The seats are toast but I have a friend who runs an upholstery dhop so she is making me a new set! She can even get the McLaren logo in the seat back!
The pull down motor bracket was broken so I ordered another motor from Henry.
The car really cleaned up well!!
I need to rebuild the brakes and suspension. I'll start a new thread with those questions..
