Location Of Black Box In 1987 McLaren Mustang

Post by Crystalstyx »

Good Morning All,

Just wanted to share the location of the black box in the 1987 Mustang for future reference.

I found it behind the lower trim panel at the bottom of the steering column. Tested the circuit and the black box indeed is the culprit for the loss of power to the rear harness as Marty suggested. Thanx Marty !

P/S, I had asked Hank if he knew the location of the box after Marty suggested that I might want to look at that as a possibility, but he told me that was only used in Capris. I will give him a heads up when I order the new one.

Crystalstyx, did your car have the Optional Recaro seats installed?

The black box under the dash is the seat relay for the Recaro seats. If an 87 or 88 had the optional Recaro's, I'm sure that this box will be present.

I was able to repair mine and I added an extra fuse in the power wire that goes to the seats so it won't happen again.

Yes Marty, the car does have Recaro seats. Just power, not heated, (don't even know if there is an option, for heated?)

I didn' see any burn or trace marks on the relay and the seats were functional before I found the relay. I believe that the rocker switch going bad and the pigtail going to it falling apart might have popped the relay. I am taking it to work for a better look
