Whew, alot of work & telephone calls. Hardest part taking notes while on phone.

"Auto~Style" {Cars} of Grand Rapids, Michigan (a division of "C & F Stamping Company" of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, owned by Pat Wall was engaged in the manufacture of Body & Trim pieces being a "Tier 1" supplier of fiberglas facias, ground effect pieces and rear spoilers to the industry. They were both an aftermarket supplier as well as an OEM supplier. (They later ran into trouble for releasing Toxic Chemicals into the enviornment.) You might remember them from the Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport VR of 1987 & 1988. A $3,500.00 custom interior & exterior styling package. However, before that, C&F had hooked up with Ford and was offering custom air dams and front facias for both Mustangs & Capris (1981-1986) for retail purchase over their respective dealership parts departments thru point-of-purchase advertising literature.

So, if I understood the former asc employee I spoke to this evening, these parts were sold to FoMoCo's Service & Parts Division for retail sale thru Ford (the company) and were customer warranteed BY FoMoCo.
He had NO recollection of these parts ever being received at ascMcLaren in Livonia. I e-mailed him the photos so he could see what I was speaking of. He DID like them (the front air dam) and said IF he had a ascMcLaren coupe, he'd put them on, too ~ but that the cars did not leave asc with these on them.

That is as far as I am going with this topic. Stick a fork in me, I' m tender & DONE.

Air dam

Post by svt1996cobra »

Sandy,

You have done a excellent job researching the supplier of the Ford original air dam that was used on the 79 Mustang Pace car, 80-81 Mustang Cobra, 82 Mustang GT, 84 RS, 85 RS or GS 5.0, and 86 Capri 5.0.

You are correct they supply the part for the factory Ford unit, see 1 st you will note their tag on the air dam picture:Image

The aftermarket spoiler was manufactured by D.H. Buck, who was bought out by A&A specialties, who manufactured both the aftermarket spoiler in question and the ASC Mclaren part: see picture 2.Image

So the question is still out there, were these put on by ASC at the plant.

David

Side note: The air dam C & F Stamping Company worked with Ford on was sold through Ford Motorsport, it was a duplicate of the Mustang SVO air dam from the moulding down, and had Motorsport embossed in it.

Yes, initially it was sold thru Ford Motorsport, but to fly under radar a bit, you see the "MotorSport" Franchise was something the dealer had to sign up for (translation = $$$$$). After a bit, the part was sold thru "Ford Parts and Service" so that any & all dealerships could sell the part. (Obviously not enough sales thru Motorsport Div.)

Regarding the rear spoiler, yes, I knew it was BUCK and they were bought out by A & A Specialties. I seem to recall that A&A took over after the ascMcLaren were all done (1984-1986 McLarens). A&A may have made the front spoiler in question, herein, as well, but my guy said (after viewing it) that ...... "That spoiler was never installed on a McLaren at the Livonia plant". "I have seen it on various Mustangs & Capris ~ but we didn't have it at the plant"

svt1996cobra, when you removed the "incorrect" front air dam from your Eurocoupe, did you notice any holes from a previous installation? Was the bumper cover cut the same as the "correct" air dam? Any signs of other front end damage? Is there a date code on any of the front nose pieces from Ford?

Air dam

Post by svt1996cobra »

There were marks in the upper bumper cover from the cover being mounted and dismounted several times, after this debate started, I looked at the holes, most lined up with a related hole in the cover, but some did not.

The upper bumper cover had been replaced at one time on the my car, it appears it took a hit right at the bumper face bar,on top of the bar, breaking the park light. I had to replace the face bar, it was bent downward. The air dam may or may not have been replaced, I am going to check for date codes!

I have contacted the gentleman that has the car for sale on ebay, hopefully I can get his story. Plus I understand there is another white Eurocoupe that has the same air dam, I am reasearching that one now.

I am also going to call a gentleman that was a purchasing agent for ASC Mclaren at the time the Capri's were built.

Sandy, I am not doubting you, but there are to many factors in question for me, to say myself, I am a 100% sure this air dam was not installed at the ASC plant.

You are no longer doubting me, you are doubting an assistant plant supervisor at the Livonia Avenue facility that built these things.
Since the EuroCoupes came at the very tail end of the project, I wonder if "my" man was still there at that point in time. These fronal air dams fo sure NEVER went on a F.P. {full packaged} 85-86 Coupe. Every EuroCoupe that Ipersonally saw BRAND NEW IN 1986 did NOT have these (in question) Air Dams. My selling dealer had 6 and non had this front. He also had a bunch of F.P. '86 Coupes and none of them, Incl. mine had it either.

Air dam

Post by svt1996cobra »

Sandy,

Here is what the owner of the car on ebay stated:

David,
Hi, the only documentation I have relative to the air dam is with Sandy Block of the ASC Registry. The word I have is that ASC had a parts shortage from the air dam & ground effects vendor that was not able to supply the ASC air dams to ASC in July of 1986, due to the mfr date & contractual ship dates to their dealers as sold orders the RS air dam & fender ground effects extensions were used affecting @ 30% of the Eurocoupes built in mid July. Sandy could not confirm nor deny this, I don't see much room for debate as you are the 3rd Euro owner to recognize this (I believe s/n 026 is configured this way too). Hope the info helps. I am registered on FEP.com but have been unable to post to it due to my work schedule.

Best Regards, Jim

lol that s/n 026 is me...I emailed him telling him I was a fellow ascMcLaren owner and to not deny a bid I might make because I don't have 100 feedbacks...of course I don't have a Eurocoupe.

Mike, those rims on your car. They were the ones substituted at the very end of production (I see your car is a late car at #26) when the Popsicle Orange rims were on short supply, so why then do you have a windshield reservor mounted on the driver's side, peeking out from under the driver's side front fender, when such could/would/might interfere with the larger tires needed for the 5-spoke rims? Could this be because of the conflect of the low production number and the late build date, or as a result of the correct front air dam being mistakenly installed? Could you graph this for me? :drinkers: :celebrate: :drinkers:

Mike M,

I am sure you will do a excellent job making the graph! However, if you are missing information you need to complete the graph, please do not make up information, of substitute it with inaccurate information. As we all know, that will effect the value of your graph.
